Texas Governor Greg Abbott is known to be opposed to equal rights for the LGBT community, and is a strong supporter of legislation in the state which would force trans people to use the bathroom that corresponds with the gender they were assigned at birth rather than the gender they identify as.
So on Monday, shortly after Abbott had announced he would indeed seek reelection to a second term as governor of the Lone Star state, trans activist Ashley Smith snapped a photo with Abbot which quickly went viral:
Smith included this caption:
“How will the Potty Police know I’m transgender if the Governor doesn’t?”
Governor Abbott, consider yourself trolled at the highest level!
Smith said she decided to just approach Abbot and ask if she could take a picture with him:
“I did not think [shouting] would work, or that I would be heard and was more interested in the getting the photograph and not getting thrown out.”
The Texas “bathroom bill” is modeled on North Carolina’s House Bill 2, which was eventually repealed when a Democrat was elected governor in 2016.
Monica Roberts says such legislation is a danger to those in the trans community:
“Those anti-trans bills, far from being about ‘privacy issues’ as the Texas Republicans have repeatedly claimed, are nothing more than naked legislative oppression aimed at the Texas trans community. Unfortunately, it is our Black trans community and other trans communities of color that will be disproportionately affected by the negative repercussions of it should these bills unfortunately pass.”
Governor Abbott has a nice new photo he can display in his office at the capitol. Why do I get the feeling he won’t?
