So much today revolves around the doom and gloom scenarios we see coming from President Agent Orange’s administration, it’s tempting to succumb to despair.
While it’s true we are witnessing ways in which our Constitution is being tested like never before, and there’s a lot that should concern us, we would be remiss if we didn’t occasionally stop to reflect on the good emerging from the looming darkness.
Be prepared to be inspired. This is the summer of the “People’s Platform.”
Last year’s Democratic National Convention reduced a lot of people to tears when Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) did not get the nomination. Instead, the party establishment chose former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.
Although millions of Sanders supporters were disappointed, all was not lost.
Bernie Sanders was allowed to assemble a platform committee comprised of some of the most progressive minds in politics today. Together, they constructed the most progressive Democratic party platform since the days of Franklin Roosevelt, addressing income inequality, unemployment, voting rights, campaign finance, alternative energy, education, and universal healthcare.
It is that platform shaping the current Democratic party.
However, Republicans currently hold the majority in Congress and the White House. If we are to see universal healthcare, fully-funded pre-K through college education, a green energy infrastructure that addresses climate change’s threats, we must be focused on flipping Congress blue next year. Getting Trump out would be nice too, but it won’t happen if the GOP retains its hold. We need to support legislation that addresses real issues facing us, and fight to elect candidates that support the legislation.
That’s why during this summer’s congressional recess, organizations like Our Revolution, People for Bernie, Democracy for America, Democratic Socialists of America, Progressive Democrats of America, #AllofUs, National Nurses United, Brand New Congress, Justice Democrats, Food & Water Action, Fight for 15, and others are organizing members to demand House Democrats support the #PeoplesPlatform:
- H.R. 676, “Medicare For All Act”
- H.R. 1880, “College for All Act of 2017”
- H.R.15 – “Raise the Wage Act”
- H.R.771 – “Equal Access to Abortion Coverage in Health Insurance (EACH Woman) Act of 2017”
- H.R. 2840 – “Automatic Voter Registration Act”
- Climate Change Bill – Renewable Energy (bill number not yet available)
- H.R. 3227 – “Justice is Not For Sale Act of 2017”
- H.R. 1144 – “Inclusive Prosperity Act”
You can help. You can sign the “Summer for Progress Petition” to show your support. Only 3,356 more signatures are needed to reach the goal of 102,400.
But you only have until Tuesday, so don’t wait.
You can also contact your representative in the House, Democrat or Republican, and urge him or her to support the bills mentioned above.
Be part of the resistance!
