However, he soon figured out that even Fox News has standards after the hosts of Outnumbered politely but emphatically shut down Gingrich’s bullshit.
The former speaker began by criticizing “the increasing intensity of hostility on the left,” implying that it’s somehow responsible for the recent congressional shooting that took place during a GOP baseball practice session in Alexandria, VA.
“You’ve had an increasing intensity of hostility on the left. I talk to college students regularly who say to me, if they openly are for Trump, they get threatened with getting beaten up, some of them get death threats.
The intensity on the left that is very real, whether it is somebody holding up, a so-called comedian holding up the president’s head and blood, or whether it’s right here in New York City, a play that shows the president being assassinated, or it’s Democratic leading national politicians who are so angry they have to use vulgarity because they can’t find any common language to talk. This intensity has been building, I think since election night.”
Host Melissa Francis was quick to chide Gingrich for his inappropriate politicization of the congressional shooting. She even tried to give him a gentle out by giving him a chance to agree that it’s not a let or right issue.
“With respect though, even if everything you’re saying is true,” Francis said. “But to talk about it in the terms of left and right right now in the wake of it, does that make sense? Does it make it worse?”
However, Gingrich wouldn’t take the easy out. He flatly replied: “No.”
She tried yet again to guide Gingrich toward a position of civility and dignity befitting someone who once served in Congress.
“Do you rise above it and say we all need to stay calm and focus on the work ahead of us?” she asked.
But, Gingrich still declined to take the high road. Instead, he doubled down, suggesting that there would be more violence from the left.
“You’ve had a series of things that send signals that tell people that it’s okay to hate Trump, it’s okay to think of Trump in violent terms, it’s okay to consider assassinating Trump. And then suddenly we’re supposed to rise above it until the next time?” Gingrich asked.
Host Abby Hunstman then chimed in to agree with her colleague, stating that the congressional shooting should not be politicized.
“This is a moment though, where you realize at the end of the day that the climate has been so divisive, it’s been so political and this is a time where you say these are all human beings whether you’re Republican, whether you’re a Democrat, we are all Americans, we are all in this fight together,” Huntsman said.
Men like Gingrich only see dollar signs in the wake of tragedies. In their minds, everything is a political football to be used to score points with the fans who pay their bills. Gingrich’s stock with the alt-right will most likely rise in the wake of his inflammatory rhetoric, which is exactly why he said what he said.
Assholes like Gingrich and Donald Trump continue to poison the political atmosphere and inspire hostility on both sides of the political spectrum.
And be sure that Republicans are already calling on the government to flood the streets with more guns, a message that their NRA puppet masters have trained them well to parrot.
Five people were injured in the shooting, including GOP House Majority Whip Steve Scalise (R-LA).
