Trump Administration Suggests ‘Morality’ Is The Reason For Crime In Chicago

On Friday, when he wasn’t on his phone attacking female MSNBC hosts, President Trump announced that he was sending federal agents to Chicago in order to combat crime, which he said had reached “epidemic proportions.” As with nearly everything he does, Trump made this public via Twitter:

Later in the afternoon, at the daily press briefing (which was again held off-camera), a reporter asked Deputy Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders if easy access to guns might have something to do with crime in the Windy City. To that, Sanders replied:

“I think that the problem there is that it’s a crime problem. I think crime is probably driven by morality more than anything else.”

If that’s the case, wouldn’t it make sense to send uber Christian VP Mike Pence out on a mission of healing and repentance so he could pray for the city, lay hands on its residents, and solve all of its problems? You game for that, Mike? Hey, why is he running away?

Along with Trump’s Twitter announcement on Chicago, Attorney General and part-time Keebler elf Jeff Sessions declared that the administration was going to get tough on guns. Of course, he didn’t mean that, but it was good PR and didn’t upset the NRA. In a statement which may have been partially crafted by the Russian ambassador, Sessions wrote:

“The Trump Administration will not let the bloodshed go on; we cannot accept these levels of violence. That’s why, under President Trump’s strong leadership, we have created the Chicago Gun Strike Force and are sending 20 more permanent ATF agents to Chicago, reallocating federal prosecutors and prioritizing prosecutions to reduce gun violence, and working with our law enforcement partners to stop the lawlessness.”

But none of this bullshit was fooling people like Shannon Watts, founder of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, who called the Trump team out for their blatant “race-baiting,” and added:

“Sarah Huckabee Sanders blew on that same dog whistle when she suggested that the morality of people in Chicago is the main cause of the city’s gun violence. Let’s be clear about what she was really doing: she was questioning the morality of black people. This is blatant racism. Coming from the highest office in our country, this is unacceptable. We all deserve better ― particularly the people of Chicago.”

If the Trump administration wants to claim the moral high ground, they’ll first have to stop being so damn immoral themselves.
