GOP Smackdown – Lawmakers Stop Just Short Of Actual Brawling

Apparently things are getting tense in the GOP, with members of Congress and Senators sparring with each other verbally and even threatening physical violence.

It all started when Congressman Blake Farenthold (R-TX) appeared on a radio talk show and said that members of the Senate who refused to repeal and replace the Affordable Care Act lacked “courage,” specifically calling out “female senators from the Northeast.” If they weren’t female, Farenthold said, he’d challenge them to a duel:

“If it was a guy from south Texas, I might ask him to step outside and settle this Aaron Burr-style.”

When word of what the Texan had said got back to Senator Susan Collins (R-ME), Collins was talking to Democratic Senator Jack Reed of Rhode Island. A hot mic caught Collins asking Reed if he’d heard about the comments of the Texas Congressman. Reed said he had and added that he was confident Collins could “beat the shit out of” the grossly out of shape Farenthold. Collins was left to comment that Farenthold was “so unattractive, it’s unbelievable.”

Senator Colllins then asked Reed:

“Did you see the picture of him in his pajamas next to this bunny, Playboy bunny?”

Oh, you mean this one from 2010 when Farenthold first ran for Congress?

While it seems unlikely that anything can shock voters in Texas as long as a candidate has the cherished “R” next to his name, it’s still interesting that Farenthold chose to pick a fight with a beloved member of the Senate. Senator Collins is known as a moderate, principled person who is quite unlike the fringe right-wingers who seem to overwhelmingly populate today’s GOP.

However, before Farenthold picks another fight, he might consider looking closely in the mirror and remembering that he reminds many of the proverbial troll living under a bridge.
