We all watched from the edge of our seats as Former FBI Director James Comey spoke to the Senate Intelligence Committee. In the end, most of us were convinced that he was fired because of the whole Russian investigation. Surely even the strongest supporters of our president felt the same way.
As it turns out, not so much.
President Donald Trump shocked the world when he won last November. It wasn’t a surprise that he won Butler County in Ohio though, taking in 61% of the vote.
They’ve voted for every Republican presidential candidate since 2000.
So CNN sent one of their national correspondents, Gary Tuckman, there to watch the Comey hearing with nine Trump supporters. They met at Rick’s Tavern & Grille in Fairfield and Tuckman asked them some questions after.
After explaining how big of a crime it is to lie during this type of hearing, he asked if any of them thought Comey had lied. Four of their hands shot up.
That wasn’t too much of a surprise, though. Trump supporters are notoriously faithful to their candidate and tend to call anyone who challenges him a liar.
Tuckman then asked if anyone thought Trump had lied. If five people didn’t think Comey had lied, then obviously those five must have thought Trump did.
Nobody raised their hand.
In fact, one person said the media is to blame:
“WELL, FIRST OF ALL, THINGS CAN BE DISTORTED AND APPEAR LIKE LIES, AND I THINK MAYBE THE MEDIA MIGHT HAVE DISTORTED SOME THINGS AND NOW WE’RE NOT GETTING BOTH SIDES.”
This was a situation between Comey and Trump, so one of them lied. Then again, his supporters are disturbingly loyal and have found a way to look away from the Russian smoke. It’s hurting the rest of our eyes, though.
