Distrust looms in the Republican-controlled Congress as audio was revealed from a June 15, 2016 joke made by House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.), who says no one remembers what transpired during the conversation.
Shortly before Donald Trump became the U.S. president, his close ally in Congress, Rep. McCarthy made a staggering political statement during a private conversation with his fellow GOP leaders on Capitol Hill. He said Trump could be the beneficiary of payments from Russian President Vladimir Putin.
According to a recording the exchange, reported by the Washington Post Rep., he said:
“There’s two people I think Putin pays: Rohrabacher and Trump.”
Dana Rohrabacher is a California Republican known in Congress as a committed supporter of Russia and Putin. The report also revealed that there was some laughter when the statement was made, but Rep. McCarthy emphasized his seriousness by saying “swear to God.”
Next, House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) intervened to maintain secrecy about the comment by declaring:
“No leaks… This is how we know we’re a real family here.”
This closed door conversation among the supposedly close knitted family was eventually spilled. Rep. McCarthy, who thought he was among his allies and confidants, never believed this secret discussion could come to light in the eyes of the public.
Turns out that no one could be trusted among his fellow Congressmen.
There has been Congressional inquiry to verify the how the comment was recorded and how it leaked out. As the investigation progressed, McCarthy pinned it on Evan McMullin, one of the “Never Trump” presidential candidates of 2016.
A report from the Hill states that an unidentified source close to the investigation says that the House GOP leadership is presently considering charging the leaker under Federal statutes or internal House rules.
Reps. McCarthy and Ryan’s aides denied the story initially, but eventually when the news broke, claimed no one ever remembers such a statement was made.
That the recorded audio came out on the very same day that the Department of Justice appointed former FBI Director Robert Mueller as a special counsel to oversee the federal investigation into Russia interference in 2016 election.
