On Tuesday, the Delaware legislature passed a bill that would guarantee abortion rights even if Roe v. Wade is overturned. The bill allows abortions until the fetus is viable, and abortions are allowed after that if the mother’s life is in danger and the baby is not likely to survive.
There were proposals to tighten the definition of viability, add a 24-hour waiting period, and even proposals to ban abortion after 20 weeks. All of these were struck down as irrelevant or unconstitutional.
Naturally, the pro-life groups are freaking out over this measure.
RNC National Committeewoman Ellen Barrosse said:
“Delaware is headed backward. This bill would open the floodgates to Gosnell-style ‘houses of horrors’ abortion clinics in Delaware.”
Delaware Right to Life spokeswoman Moira Sheridan said:
“We will exert the same pressure upon Governor Carney, a Catholic, to uphold the sanctity of life for those innocent unborn children whose lives depend upon his vetoing this radical bill.”
This measure is in direct opposition to President Donald Trump’s promises to overturn Roe v. Wade. During his campaign, he promised to appoint Supreme Court Justices who would overturn the landmark Supreme Court case and put further restrictions on abortion.
I think that these pro-life groups are overreacting. Most of the headlines from these sites read that Delaware has legalized abortion through all nine months of pregnancy, which is not true. It is only allowed until the fetus is viable. The measure is needed since women’s reproductive rights are under attack in the Trump administration.
