Though it isn’t being used by many, the word “impeachment” is now being uttered in the halls of Congress, which tells you that Donald Trump’s possibly illegal and unethical actions and words are indeed making a mark in Washington, D.C.
Texas Democratic Congressman Al Green is the latest to say that it would appear Trump needs to be charged with high crimes and misdemeanors, the standard for opening an impeachment inquiry. In a statement, Green wrote:
“President Trump is not above the law. He has committed an impeachable act and must be charged. To do otherwise would cause some Americans to lose respect for, and obedience to, our societal norms.”
Green began laying out the case against Trump by noting:
“President Trump has committed an act for which he should be charged by the U.S. House of Representatives. The act is obstruction of a lawful investigation of the President’s campaign ties to Russian influence in his 2016 Presidential Election.”
The final judgment on whether or not Trump needs to be removed from office should be made by the American public, Green concluded:
“I have said on previous occasions, and do now say again, the President should be impeached. I also say that this can happen with a Republican-controlled House and Senate if the public weighs in by demanding that the Republican President be charged by way of impeachment.”
Can anyone seriously disagree with Congressman Green? Obstruction of justice alone is enough to impeach Trump. But it will require each of us to pressure out elected representatives and let them know that we demand they do so. Donald Trump is only one man. We are hundreds of millions. This country belongs to us, not to him.
