The 2017 GLAAD Media Awards were held in New York City on Saturday night, and when actress Debra Messing went up to accept her Excellence in Media Award, she said she wanted to speak to Ivanka Trump as “one Jewish mother to another,” and then added that unless you’re an:
“Unenlightened straight, cisgender, white man, you are a target.”
Then Messing focused in directly on Ivanka, who has just released a book entitled Women Who Work:
“It’s not enough to simply say that women’s issues are important to you,” she said. “It’s time to do something. You can change the lives of millions of women and children just by telling your dad stories about real people who are suffering.
“You can’t just write ‘#womenwhowork’ and think you’re advancing feminism. You need to be a woman who does good work #saywhatyoumeanandmeanwhatyousay.”
The actress then ended her acceptance speech by telling the first daughter:
“Imagine how you’ll feel, sitting at Passover seder, if you can tell your children that you fought for justice and freedom.”
What Messing had to say may not make a bit of difference, but at least she tried. And with the Trump administration now targeting immigrants, African-Americans, women, the LGBTQ community, non-Christians, and anyone who dares to disagree with them, this is a message more and more of us need to be spreading far and wide.
The Trump administration is bound to lose, either in court or as public opinion turns against their policies, which is already happening. The time has come for all of us who are tired of their tactics to speak boldly and bravely. Speaking truth to power is how we will defeat them.
