Tina Fey is one of the smartest, funniest, most awesome people on the planet, and on Friday night she appeared at “Stand for Rights: A Benefit for the ACLU” to help raise money and awareness for the organization dedicated to civil rights and civil liberties for all Americans.
During an interview she gave, Fey spoke to the exit polls from the 2016 election which show that 53 percent of white women who voted supported Trump in the election, compared to the 43 percent who voted for former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. Fey remarked:
“A lot of this election was turned by white, college-educated women who now would maybe like to forget about this election and go back to watching HGTV. I would want to urge them to like, ‘You can’t look away’ because it doesn’t affect you this minute, but it’s going to affect you eventually.
“Again, open two windows. Do watch HGTV. [Don’t] turn our attention away from what is happening.”
The actress and comedian also made a pledge:
“I personally will make my own pledge as a college-educated white woman to not look away, to not pretend that things are happening now won’t eventually affect me if we don’t put a stop to it.”
Bravo, Tina Fey! All of us–no matter our age, race, or gender–should make the same pledge if we value the future of this country and our world.
