On Wednesday, House Oversight Committee Chair Jason Chaffetz (R-Utah) announced via Facebook that he would not be seeking re-election in 2018.
“After long consultation with my family and prayerful consideration, I have decided I will not be a candidate for any office in 2018,” the House Oversight Committee chairman said.
While many speculated that Chaffetz might be eying a Senate seat or governorship in his home state of Utah, Chaffetz denied those rumors saying that he “may run again for public office, but not in 2018.”
“For those that would speculate otherwise, let me be clear that I have no ulterior motives. I am healthy. I am confident I would continue to be re-elected by large margins. I have the full support of Speaker Ryan to continue as Chairman of the Oversight and Government Reform Committee. That said, I have made a personal decision to return to the private sector,” Chaffetz said.
Chaffetz is currently serving his second term and heads the House Oversight Committee in charge of the investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election. Many have felt that Chaffetz is quietly trying to kill the inquiry to protect “President” Donald Trump and his campaign.
In February, Chaffetz attacked the Office of Government Ethics threatening to subpoena it’s director Walter Shaub.
Shaub’s office has been highly critical of Trump’s administration, especially the president’s numerous business conflicts of interest.
However, it seems that the winds have changed in Chaffetz’s home state as A Utah Policy Poll found that the congressman’s approval ratings fell 14 points since February to 52 percent.
It’s possible that party leaders are quietly urging Chaffetz to step aside so they can guarantee that his congressional seat remains red in 2018.
But, if the American people continue to building pressure against Trump and the Republican party, it’s not inconceivable that Utah, as well as several other traditionally “red” states, could go blue in 2018.
So keep, up the pressure folks! After all, that’s what’s forcing Chaffetz to step aside, to begin with. It’s time for the adults to take back their country from the crazy orange toddler and his cronies.
