If Republicans had their way, the only folks they’d allow to vote is certain white people in certain, carefully selected (i.e. majority white) states. If you’re brown or black, the GOP thinks you should be forced to jump through as many hoops as they can possibly devise.
The perfect example can be found in Iowa, where Secretary of State Paul Pate is trying to impose much stricter voting regulations, and he doesn’t even mind if he has to lie to accomplish his goal. As the Huffington Report notes:
“To substantiate his argument, Pate’s office drafted a statement for a reporter from the local Gazette newspaper, noting that in Iowa it appeared 41 felons had cast ballots and that more than 200 election day voter registrations, or EDRs, had bounced back. The draft statement included the caveats that the irregularities ‘do not necessarily constitute fraud’ and that the state would have a more complete picture of election data come March. Pate urged his staff to release it.
“‘We need to release info and these stats are public already. When an auditor turns them over to the county attorney or sheriff for action that pretty much makes it public. Am I missing something?’ [Pate] wrote in an email.”
Pate’s own deputy even argued that the figures the Secretary of State cited are not an indication of anything illegal, writing:
“I do not believe that we should say that 41 felons illegally cast ballots. We encouraged them to use provisional ballots, so that would feel a little like we baited them to do something illegal. And it’s risky to label it ‘illegal’ because we don’t know the circumstances. It might be illegal, but [it] might not be, if someone really believed their rights were restored. We can report the number of felons voting, but let’s not call it illegal.”
But to hell with all that! A bill has been introduced in the Iowa legislature which would require voters to show a valid state ID if they want to cast a ballot in Iowa.
Where, you might ask, is the Department of Justice in all this? Well, the current Attorney General is a racist shithead from Alabama, so you won’t hear a peep out of his sorry ass.
Just because the Constitution gives us the right to vote, that doesn’t mean Republicans won’t come up with ten thousand reasons why only some of us should. And yet they wonder why people call them fascists.
