Senator Bernie Sanders (I-VT) sent shockwaves through the U.S. political system when sparked a progressive revolution during the 2016 Democratic presidential primaries.
The primaries were-were supposed to be little more than a formality for former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton before the Democratic National Committee named her as the general election candidate.
However Sanders had other plans, as the progressive firebrand captured the support of millions of Americans across all age groups and political backgrounds with his straight forward, unapolgetic liberal agenda.
Recently Sanders joined MSNBC to host a town hall in McDowell County, West Virginia, an area that voted overwhelmingly for President Donald Trump in November. Once there, he exposed something Republicans work their asses off to hide from the American people.
He proved that even the most “conservative” voters will enthusiastically support progressive policies when those policies are presented using rational and respectful dialog.
The Democratic party should be taking notes from this man, whose popularity currently dwarfs Trump. He connects with those who feel left behind by both parties, and who voted for someone who they felt truly saw them and their problems.
Of course, we all know they were wrong, but that’s not the point. The point is, unless we fix this huge perception issue with rural white voters, progressives will continue to belong to a minority party with little power because they can’t win elections.
It doesn’t matter if you supported Clinton, Sanders, or Stein in November. The focus should now be on how we reach those voters who did not believe anyone other than Donald Trump understood them.
Here’s the full town hall video. I apologize for the ignorant ass title someone put on it.
