Many people start wanting to have children when they become an adult. There are many of us who decide not to have children. We get all kinds of negative and/or condescending comments about it. Some people even go so far as to say that your life isn’t complete until you have children.
Here are just some of the condescending comments we sometimes hear:
- “Now that I have children, my life has true meaning!”
- You’re missing out on one of the best things in life.”
- “What’s wrong with you?”
- “Just find a donor and have kids!”
- “Don’t wait too long!”
This blogger decided to take it even further. Alan Thomas referred to the childfree movement as a hate group. He points out some of the negative comments childfree people made online. It’s the internet! Many of us feel like freaks for not wanting children, and we need forums for this.
Some of these parents call us selfish and even childish for not having them. It’s ridiculous. People refer to it as a mandatory step in life when it’s not. Some people just simply don’t want them, and that’s OK. We’ve really thought about what it means, and many of us have seen what it is like up close. We know that it’s something we can’t imagine doing.
I was taught that a truly good parent should put their kid before themselves. I don’t want to do that. I know I’m selfish, and that’s just one of the myriad of reasons that I decided to never have children. We are not a “hate group” just because we made different life choices.
