Our mental health care system in this country needs A LOT of work. One of the many problems related to this is addiction treatment. Facilities and care can be limited in some places. Some people can’t afford decent treatment.
Our country is suffering from an epidemic of opioid addiction. Doctors are seeing an upsurge of babies born dependent on painkillers and heroin. They go through withdrawal symptoms similar to that of an adult.
It’s 2016, people! We should be doing more to help fight the disease of addiction.
Many states just don’t have enough of a budget to help people. In some states, you don’t need to have a degree or a license to be an addiction counselor.
Most people have better results with support groups and individual counseling for people suffering from mental illnesses and/or addiction. Some people need medication, but they may not be able to afford the psychiatrist.
Many psychiatrists are not in network for insurance companies. Many people end up on waiting lists and can’t get treated for weeks or months.
Luckily, President Barack Obama signed a piece of legislation called the 21st Century Cures Act today. There are provisions that will help those with opioid addictions.
