Some teens in Arizona went to a birthday party for a classmate who happens to be Jewish. Well, they thought it would be funny to decorate cupcakes with a swastika. They had just learned about the Holocaust in school, so they thought they knew all about the Nazi symbol.

Carlos Galindo-Elvira, director of the Anti-Defamation League in Arizona, had this to say about it:
“When you joke with symbols like the swastika, you begin to normalize them and make it very casual within our society.”
The Jewish girl’s mother said:
“It always happens ‘somewhere else’ or ‘not in my backyard.’ Well how about it happening right in YOUR OWN HOUSE? By your 14-year-old daughter’s ‘friends.’”
These teens need to be taught that racism and anti-Semitism are not okay! Swastikas are not fun symbols; they represent a racist regime that killed over 6 million people.
I don’t know if the teens really meant it to be hateful, but they should be taught not to joke about it. If they really had been educated about the Holocaust, then maybe they wouldn’t have thought the symbol was funny. The story has now gone viral.
